Sweden residence permit for higher education

- Who it is for. You want to apply for a residence permit for higher education in the form of first- or second-cycle studies or exchange studies at a university or university college. If your family will be accompanying you, they can apply at the same time. The residence permit must be issued before you travel to Sweden.
- Outside the EU/EEA. If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA, you will in most cases need a residence permit to study in Sweden.
- Final admission. You must be finally admitted to full-time studies in Sweden. You cannot be granted a residence permit for distance learning as a form of study.
- Full-time credits. For studies at universities and university colleges, taking 30 credits per semester counts as full-time studies. Studies in other education programmes, such as at a folk high school, must include planned study work averaging at least 20 teaching hours per week.
- Tuition fee. You must have paid any tuition fees before applying
- Maintenance 2026. at least SEK 10,656 per month, if you applied in 2026
- Maintenance 2025. at least SEK 10,584 per month, if you applied in 2025.
- Free food or housing reduction. SEK 2,960 per month for free food and SEK 4,736 per month for free housing, if you applied in 2026
- Family amounts. SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse or cohabiting partner
- Documents. Translate documentsAll submitted documents should be in Swedish or English. If you have translated your documents, the translation should be certified. You must also include a copy of the document in its original language.
