- Who it is for. This visa is for students who are paying international tuition fees themselves, or with support from family, a loan, or a partial scholarship. You must have an offer of place from an approved education provider.

- Tuition already paid. You must be able to show you have paid the tuition fees for 1 course, or 1 year of study — whichever is shorter.
- Living costs, one year or more. NZD $20,000 for each year if you are studying for 1 year or more
- Living costs, under one year. NZD $1,667 for each month if your study is shorter than 1 year.
- School living costs. If you are studying in compulsory education — for example, at a school in Years 1 to 13 — you must have NZD $17,000 for each year or NZD $1,417 for each month.
- Work. work part-time up to 25 hours a week while studying and full-time in holidays, depending on your visa conditions
- Insurance. You must agree to have insurance for travel and any health care you need, from the start of your course until your visa expires. This will be a condition of your student visa.
- Under 10. If the student is aged under 10 and not going to live in a New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)-approved school hostel, they must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and live with that person while studying.
